Energy, Society and Place Research Unit

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham

ESPRU is a group of geographers and environmental social scientists researching the social, spatial and environmental dimensions of energy production and consumption, based at the University of Birmingham.

We maintain a particularly strong focus on issues of social justice and resilience as they relate to energy use.

ESPRU is one of the largest groups of geographers studying energy issues within a single university anywhere in the world.

We are an active part of the ‘Energy in Birmingham‘ initiative – a thriving community of over a hundred academics, who engage in collaborative research in energy issues both at home and across the globe.

Among other facilities, the group maintains a thermal sensing lab that is used for research- and teaching-related purposes.
